The floating object here is a Trigram, the first Esper a human character will acquire in-game.
An Esper can first be obtained in Sunstream City from part of the Mandatory quest chain. For this quest you will need to kill 10 Mountain Boars. Be sure to do this quest before you leave Sunstream! To get this quest you have to first complete the Situation quest line, given by Tanis Ka. After a short quest, players will receive their first Esper, the Trigram. However, players won’t be stuck with this one Esper; there are many others that can be obtained from quests, purchased from the Esper Mystic, or occasionally found inside mystery boxes such as the one sold by the Sky Dweller. Players should keep in mind that the more powerful the Esper, the more difficult it will be to obtain. In addition, certain Espers will only be available to certain factions. The Esper Pandora’s Box is limited only to the Vim, for example.
For a full list of all available Espers, see the List of Espers page.
Espers also add a separate dynamic to the game by making the Esper itself into a major part of your character. An Esper is equipped like a piece of gear, giving your character more stats. These stats can be increased by raising its level, which can be accomplished by using the skill unique to that Esper. Also, equipping an Esper allows the use of Skyblades, which allow your character to fly.

Below is more advanced information, give it a read through then move onto Pets

Invigorating with an Esper

The main purpose of an Esper is to Invigorate, otherwise known as botting. This allows the time requirements of high levels to exist without the frustration of the grind itself. Your character will be able to grind on hundreds or thousands of monsters while you are away, gaining EXP and picking up items by itself, while using healing items when its health is low. In order to start botting with an Esper, its Esper Energy (represented by a red bar on top of the main Esper bar) must be at least half full. Once your Esper Energy has reached the necessary level, the big red sword button on the left side of the main Esper bar will light up. You may then click on this button to begin Invigorating. Click the button again to stop Invigorating. Esper Energy will not be consumed by Invigorating until your character reaches Level 90. Past that level, you will need to use Esper Energy items.
The first two slots on the main Esper bar are for Esper skills only. Very few Espers will have more than one skill, so the second slot will usually be empty. The third slot contains Health potions that the Esper will use whenever the character's health drops below a certain level. Similarly, the fourth slot contains Spirit potions that will be used automatically. The fifth slot contains vigor potions and the last slot contains Esper Energy items (such as Lunarshade Stones).
The secondary Esper bar (which can be shown by clicking the little arrow button in the upper right of the main Esper bar) is where you can place items and skills to be used in regular intervals. The first three slots are for items, and the remaining slots are for skills. Skills placed further to the left on this bar will have higher priority.

Invigorate Details: If you click the middle right button on the main Esper bar, it will open the Invigorate Details window. This window is used to set your options for potion use, item pickup, and the time between the use of skills.
The top part of the window determines the Health and Spirit levels that the Esper will use potions, and the time duration between them. For example, if the HP setting is at 50%, the Esper will automatically use the assigned Health potion when your Health drops below 50%. If the time is set to 2 seconds, then it will not use another potion for at least 2 seconds. The default settings will work fine for most of the monsters in the early stages of the game, but once you reach a higher level, it will be important to use trial and error to find the best settings for each group of enemies. You might want to set your Health threshold lower if you get better potions, to make sure you won't waste any of the potion due to reaching full Health with only a portion of it, or you might want to set the time between potions lower if the enemies are hitting you very hard.
Note: The time between potions can be set to zero seconds. This will cause the Esper to have no cooldown between potion use, in case you are fighting a very difficult enemy that hits so hard that even one second is too long to wait between potions.
The middle portion of this panel is used to determine what items the Esper will pick up. You can set it to pick up all items, no items, or you can specify certain items that you want it to only pick up or not pick up. Typing in only part of the name will work, so for example if you enter the word "Recipe" in the "Only pick up" section, then the game will only pick up items with the word "Recipe" in their name, leaving everything else on the ground. Clicking the gold circle "Quick Setting" button allows you to specify entire categories of items, including Provisions, Crafting Materials, Refinery Talismans and Imbue Talismans.
The bottom portion of the window contains the skill timers. The numbers next to each box determine how much time (in seconds) that the Esper will wait between uses of any skills or items placed on the secondary Esper bar. It is important to check the skills and determine the best amount of time to wait between each. For example, a skill that increases your Defense for 30 minutes should be set to 1800 seconds so that it doesn't waste Spirit refreshing itself.
If you would rather not use any skills at all, select the "Disable Skills" checkbox.
Once you are done changing your settings, select "Done" to save them.

Invigorate Settings: If you click on the bottom button on the Main Esper bar, this will open the Invigorate Settings panel. This panel is used to set what monsters the Esper will target, and how far it will stray from its starting point.
The top part of this window allows you to select whether or not the Esper will attack common monsters, elite monsters, and bosses. For example, killing monsters in the the higher level zone can spawn special frog Prince monsters that drop a lot of loot, and you want to make sure your Esper is set to attack them.
Checking the "Attack quest monsters only" box will cause your Esper to only attack monsters that are needed for quests. Once you have completed the quest, the Esper will stop attacking.
Note: Regardless of any of these settings, your Esper will fight back against anything that attacks you. This includes other players, as determined by your PvP Settings.
The bottom section determines the Esper's range. The Esper will only target monsters nearby, but if Small, Medium, or Large range is selected, it will remain within a certain range of where it started Invigorating, and will run back to that point if it strays too far. Setting your Esper to Small or Medium when you plan to bot for a long period of time will prevent you from straying into another player's botting area, which would cause both of you to get less loot and EXP. On the other hand, if you would like to control your character freely while Invigorating, the Unlimited option will prevent the Esper from returning to its starting point.
The box next to the range selection allows you to filter out the monsters you don't want your Esper to attack.

TROUBLESHOOTING: If your esper suddenly stops attacking monsters except when they attack you first, check for the following:
  • Are these quest monsters? Try toggling the Attack quest monsters only box.
  • Are these elite monsters or higher? Try toggling the Attack common monsters and Attack elite monsters boxes.
  • Do you have a blank line in your mob filter list? Try clearing the list by clicking on the Clear All button (yellow circle with two red lines)

Other Functions

Upgrading Espers: Each time you cast an Esper's bonus skill (which is automatically placed in slot 1 or 2 of the main Esper bar), the Esper will gain 1 point of Proficiency. The purple bar on the bottom of the Esper represents its Proficiency. When this bar fills up, the Esper will gain a level, which will increase the stats the player gains from equipping it. Wyvern Blood and Tiamat Blood in the Marketplace can also increase your Esper's Proficiency.
An Esper's level is based on your own level. See the Upgrading Espers page for more information.

Skyblades: The button on the right side of the main Esper bar is used to activate a Skyblade, if you have one equipped. Skyblades require level 45 to equip. Your Esper Energy must be completely full in order to start using a Skyblade, and you cannot be in combat or on a mount. Unlike Invigorate, Esper Energy will be consumed while flying on a Skyblade, regardless of your character's level. Skyblades have Proficiency just like Espers do, represented by the bottom bar of the main Esper bar. Proficiency increases slowly while you are using your Skyblade. As it reaches certain levels, its speed will increase and it will look slightly different. See the Skyblades page for more information.

Transform: The button to the left of the Invigorate button is used to Transform. Transform Gems can be purchased from the Transform Vendor in Sunstream and the Divine Realm. These items allow you to transform into a type of monster, which changes how you look and increases your stats slightly. Esper Energy will be consumed while you are transformed.

Esper Mystics have a variety of other functions that can be used with Espers and/or Skyblades:
Catalyze: Select this option to increase an Esper or Skyblade's Proficiency using an item such as Wyvern Blood (for an Esper) or a Zephyr Seal (for a Skyblade).
Bloodsmelting: Select this option to combine two Espers together into a more powerful version. A Bloodsmelting medium is required in order to combine two Espers. These can be obtained by trading Treasure Bowls or Spirit Dust with Tonni in Sunstream City, or by combining Esper Tomes and Accessories through Crafting with certain recipes.
Assimilate: Select this option to combine a variety of other items with your Esper, such as resetting its skills using a Tawen Gem.
Cleanse: Select this option to reset the owner of an Esper or Skyblade that you have acquired from another player. This action requires a Cleanse Stone found on the Marketplace.

Pets

In addition to your Esper, pets also accompany you on your adventures. Pets can help you by fighting, gathering, or crafting. Your pet will do its best to aid you on your journey. Pressing 'P' in game will open the Pet window.

Once you are done with the Pet Introduction, you are welcome to move onto Faction Selection.

What Is A Pet?

The pet in Jade Dynasty is your NPC companion. They are funny little creatures that enjoy talking to you. They might make you laugh, and they might make you mad. Pets can also evolve, which changes their appearance.

How Do We Get A Pet?

Your first pet, a Woody Pig, is found inside the Treasure Chest at level 10.
When you reach level 35 you will automatically get a quest to talk to Pet Master Ellan in Sunstream City. Complete the quest and you will randomly get one of two pets, the Dryadling (plant) or the Woody Pig.
Dryadling Woody Pig
Also, at level 45, Pet Tamer Totto has a quest called Free Lunch, which will give you either a Plump Toad or a Wild Wolf.
Additionally, at level 60, you can buy a net from the Pet Tamer, and go capture a pet using the Pet Capture system.
Don't forget! You have to tame a pet before you can use it!
Image: PetTame.jpg

What Are Pets Used For?

Pets can do any of the following:
  • Fight in combat alongside the player. Only one pet can fight alongside the player at a time.
  • Can give you added stats by Fusing or Esperating:
    • Fuse means your pet becomes attached to you. You take reduced damage, and your resistances are increased. Note: Your pet will unsummon itself when fused with a player.
    • Esperate will again unsummon your pet and boost the stats you obtain from the Esper you are wearing.
  • Can forage for materials needed for crafting pet gear and other items in the Pet Workshop.

Pets gain EXP as your character defeats monsters, as long as they are summoned in Combat status. It doesn't matter if they actually help fight, they will gain experience as long as they are standing near you.
Your pet's level is capped at 5 levels above yours, and will stop gaining EXP once it reaches that level. Once your character levels again, your pet will continue to gain EXP. An Ascended character's Pets have a maximum level of 150, regardless of what level they currently are.
Your pet has stats just like your character does: Health, Spirit, Min and Max Attack, Defense, Accuracy, Evasion, and the five types of resistances. To see your pet's stats, press P to open the Pet Roster and click on the "Stats" button. These stats increase with your pet's level and its Growth rates in those stats. Without being trained with jades, your pet's stats will be low, but it will still be of great help in combat.
For more information about raising pet stats, see the Train page.

What is Pet Gear?

You can purchase armor for your pet that can increase its stats further. Visit a Pet Tamer to purchase basic gear (it's cheap) and stats are assigned to the gear at random.
To equip the gear, simply right-click the gear once it is in your bag. To view the gear currently equipped to your pet, press 'P' in-game to bring up the Pet Roster, then on the bottom left, click the "Pet Gear" button.

More powerful Pet Gear can be crafted in the Pet Workshop using items found from Foraging.

How Do Pets Evolve?

Read this advanced guide: Evolve
Pets can evolve when their Grade reaches a certain point. Grade is a representation of a Pet's overall Growth Rates. By training your pet with a variety of Pet Jades, you can increase its Growth Rates and with them its Grade.
A Pet can evolve to its second form at Grade 12, or to its third form at Grade 18. Once the Pet has reached the required Grade, it can be evolved by training it with a special mushroom purchased from Pet Tamer Totto.
Evolution does not make a pet stronger, it is only a visual change that represents your pet's higher stats to other players. If you prefer the way your pet looks in a lesser form, or if you don't care either way and would rather not spend the gold to evolve it, there are no downsides to keeping it in a lower form.

Raising Pet Grade
When you reach level 45, Pet Tamer Totto will give you a quest called Free Lunch.
You will need to kill the following monsters around Sunstream City:
  • 10 Butterflies
  • 10 Wild Wolves
  • 10 Plump Toads
Once completed, you will go back to Pet Tamer Totto and end the quest, open your bag and you'll see you got a Wild Wolf or a Plump Toad. These pets do not have any Aptitudes, so they cannot Forage for materials. They also cannot be Trained, so they cannot evolve. If you get lucky with a good Star Sign, they may be worth holding on to for combat, but their main purpose is to be released in exchange for jade pieces.
Simply train your wolf or toad to level 30 and then bring them back to Pet Tamer Totto to release them. When a pet is released, you will get broken jade pieces as a reward. Train the Pet you want to improve with these broken jade pieces to increase your Pet's Growth Rates in various stats. As the Pet's Growth Rates improve, so will its Grade.
You can only use these broken jade pieces to reach Grade 8. At this point, you must either trade Celebeans to Pet Tamer Totto or Release higher-Grade Pets in order to obtain better Pet Jades that can increase a Pet's Growth Rates further.
You can see the Pet's current Grade by pressing "P" and hovering over the Pet's picture in the Pet Roster.

What Other Pets Are Available?

There are a wide variety of other pets available, purchased from NPCs, rewarded from quests, purchased from the Marketplace, or even captured from the wild.
For a full list of available pets, please visit the List of Pets page.

Can Pets Die?

Yes, but it isn't permanent. You can view your pet's Age by pressing "P" and hovering over the pet's picture. The current number is referred to as "Age" while the maximum number is referred to as "Life". If your pet's Age reaches its maximum Life span, the pet will die and cannot be summoned until its Age is reduced or its Life is increased.
A pet's Age increases by 1 point every five minutes, if they are in Combat or Foraging status. A pet's Age will not increase while it is in Rest status.
Pet Tamer Totto sells a variety of items to reduce a Pet's Age or increase its maximum Life. Some of them can be used by right-clicking on a summoned pet, but if your pet is too old and can no longer be summoned (as represented by the word "Lame" next to its name) then there are also items that can be Trained onto your pet instead.
NOTE: Age and Health are different. When a Pet's Health reaches zero, it will return to your Pet Roster and must be re-summoned. Its Health will be low after being defeated in this way, but if you have the necessary items, it's easy to simply heal your Pet back to full Health and keep using it.
Keep in mind that being defeated in combat will reduce a pet's maximum Life. Higher-level pets will lose more Life from being defeated.

How Do We Feed Our Pet?

Your pet will get hungry from time to time. You can easily see whether your pet is hungry or not by the little colored circle to the right of a summoned pet's Health bar. You can also see the numbers directly on your Pet Stats screen, on the bottom right under "Belly".
When your pet is full, it will do extra damage. When your pet is hungry, it will do less damage.
The Treasure Chest given to all new players contains enough Pearl Grapes to keep your pet fed for a long time, but if you ever do run out, you can buy more from the Pet Tamer. You might even find pet food while adventuring out in the world!

How Do We Make Pets Forage (gather)?

Once your pet reaches level 30 it gains the capability to gather materials for itself. This is known as "Foraging".
There are six different types of foraging:
Farming
Woodwork
Hunting
Fishing
Mining
Treasure
To make your pet forage press "P" and click the top button that says "Combat". Now you will see a status window that shows what actions your pet can take and what this pet's current status is. There are some colored bars at the bottom of the window that display your pet's Aptitudes for easy reference.
Simply click on the type of Foraging you would like to perform. The pet will attempt to find an item every 15 minutes, and its rate of success is determined by its Aptitude. If an Aptitude is 0, the pet will not be able to gather the corresponding materials.
Each foraging attempt consumes 100 belly points. Foraging pets are not auto-fed, and they will be unable to forage if they run out of belly. Pay attention to their belly levels and make sure they have enough to keep foraging.
NOTE: Your pet must be stowed in order to forage. When you summon it the pet will go back into combat mode.

Pets of different levels gather different materials.
Grade 1 Materials LV30 - LV70
Grade 2 Materials LV71 - LV100
Grade 3 Materials LV101 - LV120
Grade 4 Materials LV121 - LV135
Grade 5 Materials LV136 - LV145
Grade 6 Materials LV146 - LV150

Other Functions

There are a few basic functions you should understand in order to properly obtain and use a pet.
Tame Pet: A pet must be tamed before it can be used, whether it is a brand new pet or it was acquired from another player. The Pet Master Ellan can help you tame any pets you have acquired.
Train Pet: The Pet Master Ellan also helps you train your pets. There are many different items to train your pet with, and each has a different function. You can change your pet's Specialty or Title, increase its attribute Growth rates, or teach it different skills.
Rename Pet: Take your tamed pet to the Pet Tamer and select this option to give your pet a new name, up to 8 characters long.
Auto Feeding: You can set your pet to auto-feed by pressing "P" and putting a pet Battery, like a Wongzo Grape, into the empty box on the bottom right of the pet window. When a summoned pet loses a certain amount of health, spirit, or belly, it will automatically use the battery. Click on the colored circle to the right of your summoned pet's Health bar in order to change the levels that will trigger auto-feeding. Only summoned pets will be fed automatically.

Pet Stats

Pet Grade: Pet Grade is a representation of its average Growth rate. A pet can start anywhere from Grade 1 to 4, depending on its stats when it is first tamed. Training a pet to increase its growth rates will also increase its Grade. When the pet reaches certain Grades, it will be able to Evolve.
Mood: This determines what you pet will say to you while it is summoned.
Type: Otherwise known as a pet's species, each pet type has a unique passive skill called a Pet Faculty. The pet's Type also determines which Foraging/Crafting Aptitudes it has. For example, a Woody Pig is a Beast type, so it has Aptitude in Woodwork and Hunting.
Star Sign: A pet can have one of 9 different Star Signs. These determine its maximum Growth rates, as well as which skills it can learn.
Growth: Determines how high your pet's attributes are. Each attribute has a different growth rate associated with it, and requires a different type of pet jade to increase. The chances of increasing growth decrease dramatically as the growth increases.
Pet Specialty: A pet's specialties increase the ranks of the skills they are associated with. In the three hexagons, a vertex is chosen as a pet's main specialty, with its adjacent vertexes as sub-specialties. The pet's main specialty is marked by a sun icon, while its sub specialties are marked by moon icons. Depending on the position of the main specialty, a pet will have 2 or 3 sub specialties.
Trait: A pet's Trait attribute has greater Growth than other attributes. This also determines what type of pet jade you will get from releasing that pet.

Pet Specialties

Main Article
Each pet is randomly given a specialty when it is tamed. This specialty increases the ranks of all affected Pet Skills. It is very important that your pet's specialty matches its skills. If you would like to change a pet's specialty, simply train it with a Specialty Potion.

Pet Trivia & Examples

Skills

Press the 'R' key in-game to open the Skills panel. The left side of this panel will display any skills of your faction that you have already learned. The right side of this panel will include the skills for your current tier, with a + symbol in the bottom right corner of any skills you are currently able to learn. Most skills require a certain level, as well as a certain number of ranks in the skill above them in the tree. Each Skill costs 1 Skill Point to learn.
The "Skill Tree" subheader will allow you to view what skills can be learned by other factions, or by other Tiers in your own faction.

Skill Progression:
Once a human character selects their faction at level 15, they still need to spend at least 8 points in their Initiate skills before allocating points into Tier 1 skills. At least 24 points must be spent in Tier 1 in order to begin spending points in Tier 2. The remaining Tiers all require 24 points in order to move on to the next Tier.
Since Athan characters do not have an Initiate tier, they must spend 32 points in Tier 1 before they can spend points in Tier 2 skills. The remaining Tiers all require 24 points in order to move on to the next Tier.

Total Skill Points at Milestone Levels
  • Level 15: 15 Skill Points
  • Level 45: 45 Skill Points
  • Level 90: 90 Skill Points
  • Level 120: 120 Skill Points
  • Level 135: 135 Skill Points

  • Ascended Level 150: 175 Skill Points
(From Ascended Levels 135-150, you receive 2 Skill Points per Level)

Tome Skills: Skills are also altered by Tome Points to have different and/or stronger effects. Click the "Tome" button in the upper right of the Skills panel to view your Tome. See the Tome Skills page for more details.

Other Types of Skills

In addition to Faction skills, there are also the following other categories of skills:
Clan Skills: These skills are usable by all members of a Clan, and they give special bonuses to all Clan members in your party. If you are in a Clan, press the G key to open its interface and see the status of your Clan skills.
Ascension Skills: After Ascending and choosing a Faction, a character will have four special skills. The main effects of the skills are determined by their Faction after ascending, and the skill is altered based on what faction you were before. The alteration is shown in purple text on the Ascension skill's description. These skills cannot be changed or upgraded in any way. (To view these skills, click on the "Affinity" header and look at the top row of the separate window that pops up.)
Affinity Skills: After an Ascended character reaches Level 90, they can choose an Affinity, between Dagos, Felkin, and Fuwa. This allows them to spend their Affinity Points to learn and upgrade special Affinity Skills, which include both active and passive abilities, and some upgraded versions of their existing faction skills. (These skills are found under the "Affinity" header, with one subheader for each Affinity.)
Romance Skills: These skills can be learned and upgraded using Romance points, and are used to interact with the character that is married to yours. These skills are found under the "Social" header of the Skills panel.
Expertise Skills: These skills are learned and upgraded using Expertise points, which are gained from the Master and Apprentice system. These skills are found under the "Social" header of the Skills panel. (Click the "Expertise" subheader.)
Crafting and Pet Capture Skills: Found under the "Others" header. Crafting skills are passive abilities that allow you to gain bonus gemstones while crafting that can be traded in for items. See the Pet Capture page for more information on Pet Capture skills.
